Zebra Swallowtail Butterfly habitat

Shenandoah River State Park, Virginia

This Virginia State Park manages a deft combination of groomed areas for play and picnicing, with unkempt wild areas for nectar flowers and pawpaw trees, among others. The Zebra Swallowtail’s caterpillars feed on pawpaw trees, such as the one whose deep burgundy flowers you can see at the top. The adult was nectaring in the herbs at the tree’s base.
